Total journey: 1,779 miles / 2,863 km, Bag End to the Cracks of Doom — the figure used by the long-running Éowyn Challenge "Walk to Mordor", derived from Barbara Strachey's Journeys of Frodo and Karen Wynn Fonstad's Atlas of Middle-earth.
The four ★ stage totals (Rivendell 737 km, Lothlórien 1,481 km, Rauros 2,107 km, Mount Doom 2,863 km) and every landmark in Stage 1 come straight from that mile-by-mile data. Landmarks marked est in stages 2–4 are positioned from the route plotted on the map: each stage's verified total is split among its landmarks in proportion to the actual on-map path distance between them — far better than a guess, though still an estimate.
Distances are Tolkien's geography, not a game map. (LOTRO and most game maps compress the world heavily and aren't to scale.) 1 mile = 1.60934 km.
